Most Palestinians reject Hamas’s violent anti-Semitism and want a two-state solution

The Israeli Response

  • A recent opinion poll found 83% of West Bank Palestinians either “extremely” (~68%) or “somewhat” (%15) support the October 7th massacre. 98% reported “feeling a sense of pride as a Palestinian considering the ongoing events.”
  • Al Qassam Brigades - the armed wing of Hamas that carried out the October 7th massacre - enjoyed an 89% approval rate among Palestinians, reflecting societal consensus in support of the terrorist forces which massacred, raped, kidnapped, and tortured over 1,640 Israelis on October 7th.
  • Palestinian Islamic Jihad, another Palestinian terror organization that participated in the October 7th massacre, had an 84% approval rating.
  • Hamas itself enjoyed a 76% approval rating. The slight gap in approval between the Hamas forces responsible for the massacre and Hamas itself, can be explained by criticism towards internal Hamas social policies and corruption unrelated to the “armed resistance” against Jews.
  • The Palestinian Authority, which is often perceived as an ostensibly moderate partner for peace, had only a 10% approval rating.
  • 78% of West Bank Palestinians want a “Palestinian state from the river to the sea.”
  • Only 13% supported a “two-state solution for two peoples.” Interestingly, 8% supported a “one-state solution for two peoples,” which reflects an expectation that the “Palestinian state from the river to the sea” supported by 78% would be Jew-free.
  • All in all, only 21% of Palestinians accepted a resolution that would allow Jewish communities to remain, either inside Israel in a two-state solution or as a minority in a Palestinian state.
  • The overwhelming rejection of a two-state solution by Palestinians is stable and consistent, as demonstrated by repeated Palestinian rejection of all two-state peace offers proposed along decades of the conflict.

Conclusions

Unfortunately, very few Palestinians are willing to entertain any resolution to the conflict that does not involve total ethnic cleansing of Jews, including a two-state solution. Currently, the supporters of parties perceived as working towards such a solution, such as the Palestinian Authority, are a fringe minority in Palestinian society.
